Dopo aver incontrato tre streghe che predicono loro un radioso futuro (il primo salirà sul trono ora occupato da Duncan, mentre il secondo genererà un re), i nobili scozzesi Macbeth e Banquo tornano a palazzo assai turbati. Il rovello del marito non sfugge alla crudele lady Macbeth, che lo spinge ad assassinare Duncan. Cinta la corona, affinché non si avveri l'altra profezia, Macbeth paga due sicari per uccidere Banquo e suo figlio: ma le streghe hanno in serbo altri verdetti...
